My body wanted me up at 530.
Thirteen hours later, after pre-schoolers and 2nd graders, I was standing in front of a cash register. Asking people if they wanted their food for here or to go. I kept up my energy as much as possible. Just using inflection. Lying to myself and my customers about my disposition. A man got his food to go. And I assured him we would put his rice crispy treat in his to go bag for him. He got super excited. I said “If this is the highlight of your day, I feel sorry for what ever kind of day you had.” And he told me, “It’s the end of the day, it’s the small things that count. The smallest things that entertain you the most.” And I said, “Well this is just the beginning of my night. And I’ve been up since dawn.” He told me, “You’re still energetic. So that’s good.”
His food came up. I bagged it, put in the rice crispy treat and brought it out to him. Told him to have a good night. And he said, “You too. I hope your night gets better.”
And that little gem. That smallest comment was what made my night better.
